I've never heard the 420s/425s before, so I don't know just how MUCH of a compromise they are. The 530s (and I assume 535s) have a really special character, a smoothness unlike anything I've heard before. So anyways, this post is both an inquiry and a warning to the poster above. I have come close to biting the bullet, but I think it would be a complete waste if they lack the great mids that made the 530s special. The lower price point and cool silver color of the 425s have been calling to me, as it seems they're at every other store I go to. I have been very intrigued reading about the new 425s/535s, particularly with their smaller form factor and stronger cables. If it weren't for their gargantuan size (at least for my ears) shoddy cable, and severe roll-off, I wouldn't have sold them. So to sum it all up, I'm basically just asking you guys, as somebody mostly after clarity in his IEMs, which set would you choose?Īs a prior owner of the 530s, I absolutely LOVED their silky smooth mids. My Turbines and other IEMs couldn't handle the bass of the My Twisted Dark Fantasy album (in FLAC), so whichever Shure IEM you guys vote for has to be able to handle the likes of Dark Fantasy without distortion and without feeling too. I listen to a lot of different music, from power ballads (Air Supply, etc.) to Indie (Death Cab For Cutie, The Postal Service, et al) to Synth-y (Franz Ferdinand, Passion Pit) and I've recently started listening to Kanye West, particularly the Twisted Dark Fantasy album. I've read somewhere that the SE535s have more bass than the SE425s, but I'm really after the clarity of the IEMs since I have a great equalizer (and bass booster, which doesn't make the bass overpowering at all) on my P3 anyways.

I've been Googling around a lot, and apparently these 2 IEMs have very similar sound quality. The SE535s are only sold in one store, for $100 over the MSRP, so it comes off at $549.99. The SE425s are sold almost everywhere here, for $329.99, so availability is no problem. I have a few hundred bucks to blow on a new pair of headphones, and since I'm done with Monster (until they give the Turbine a wire that's durable like the Tours or hell, the Solos), I'm back to Shure. Before you guys tell me to use the search button, I have, and nothing really seemed to answer my question.
